Day
2: Casablanca - Meknes
In
no rush, after breakfast, we depart for Casablanca enroute to Rabat. You’ll
have a guided visit to Hassan II Mosque: one of the most impressive religious
and cultural sites anywhere in the world, constructed on the sea and dominated
by the highest minaret of the world at 210m. Half of the mosque lies on
reclaimed land over the Atlantic Ocean and part of the mosque's floor is made
of glass so worshippers can kneel and pray directly over the sea. Lunch will be
at the famous Rick’s Café. The visit of Rabat: the capital, will begin by
discovering the crenelated walls, ochre-red, and more than 5km long. We’ll visit
the Medina and souks (more authentic than other stores because the products are
aimed at the local clientele and therefore less touristic). Next, the Kasbah of
Oudaia. Then on to the Tower of Hassan II, where the 4 facades are decorated
differently, in three shades of pink and one in grey due to weathering by the
sea breeze; the ruins of the old mosque and the mausoleum of Mohammed V. Then, on
to the new town to see the Royal Palace, the official residence of King Mohamed
VI and the adjacent necropolis of Chellah, built in 1339 to house the tombs of
the Merinid Dynasty. Morocco’s long history, from all its influences will color
the very essence of who you are in your own culture. Then, Meknes where you’ll
have dinner and spend the night in your luxury accommodation.
Day 3: Meknes-Fes
After breakfast, you take a guided tour of Meknes, the smallest of the imperial cities. It crosses Bab Mansour, the most important and significant among the gates of Meknes and goes into the streets of the town up to the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail (where you’ll need to dress appropriately). From here we proceed to the barns of Hri Moulay Ismail. Here, the imperial grain store is the most important monument of the city, built with walls of beaten clay mixed with stones and straw. We then enter into the heart of the medina across the El-Hedim Square visiting the market and the souk. From Meknes with an hour's drive we reach Fes, but along the way we’ll visit the archaeological site of Volubilis, the ancient Roman capital of this part of the empire. We get to Fes in the evening, have a sumptuous dinner, and spend the night in luxury accommodation.
Day 4: Fes
Fes
deserves a busy day. You can start your tour of the old city of Fes (Fes
el-Bali) and its medina, the largest and most famous of the Arab world,
entering from Bab Boujloud, the most important gate and heading towards Dar
Batha - a fine museum of folk art. We continue with a visit to the Medersa Mosque,
Koranic school in Fez, where boys studied the Koran between rooms. Here, your
attention will be drawn to the magnificent patio. The tour then continues
through the largest and oldest Chouara Tannery. We’ll
discover the system for processing leather. Next, the Qaraouiyine Mosque: the oldest existing, continually
operating and the first degree awarding educational institution in the world (according
to UNESCO). The mosque was founded by Fatima al-Fihri in 859. It’s one of the
leading spiritual and educational centres of the historic Muslim world. We pass through the square of Seffarine, where coppersmiths and tinkers work and
sell wares in the square and adjacent streets. You leave the Medina from Bab Semmarine. Dinner and overnight in your luxury
accommodation.
