From there, you'll see the lake Dayet Srji, if time permits. We go back to
Rissani to enjoy the Berber Pizza with 44 spices as we get to know the

Kasbah of this city, before our day ends with dinner at our luxury
accommodation in Merzouga.
Day 6: Merzouga - Boumalen N Dades

deepest and narrowest point, only 15km from Tinghir, a trench through the High
Atlas presents is one of Mother Nature’s triumphs. Its gigantic rock walls will
change colour before your eyes as the day changes. Entering the gorge proper,
the road follows the west flank of the Todra palmery, a last, fertile shaft of
land, narrowing at points to a ribbon of palms between the cliffs. It’s
something special. Walking it will heighten your experience. The drama of the
scenery in such a tranquil setting is majestic. We’ll lunch here, before
continuing on to Boumalne Dades where we start the 25km long valley leading to

enchanting souks, the magnificent Bahia Palace, the Saadain
Tombs where Saadian Sultan Ahmed al-Mansour ed-Dahbi spared no expense,
importing Italian Carrara marble and gilding honeycomb muqarnas (decorative
plasterwork) with pure gold to make the Chamber of the 12 Pillars a suitably
glorious mausoleum. With no time to waste, next comes the famous Koutoubia Mosque with its
stunning minaret and lush gardens. We lunch at a typical Moroccan restaurant. In
no rush, we enter the heart of Marrakech: the Medina, where Arab and Berber
cultures explode in color, noise and originality. Smell spices. Taste olives.

jewelry nearby to make purchases if you desire. And now we are on the road to Essaouira. We’ll

Free
day in Essaouria, formerly known as Mogador. Take a stroll along the beach or
through the Medina or go for a swim, there are lots of relaxing things to do in
Essaouria as well as take advantage of the first rate Hammans and Spas. It’s an artist’s colony so a great place to go
shopping for memories of Morocco. You won’t have trouble navigating Essaouira’s
smaller medina on your own and the locals are friendly and obliging. The medina
was added to UNESCO’s World Heritage list in 2001. Its well-preserved,
late-18th-century fortified layout is a prime example of European military
architecture in North Africa. Take time to walk the wave-lashed ramparts that
surround the medina to overview the labyrinth of streets. And from up here it’s
a great place to sit and watch the sun go down. Some say Essaouria is the
spiritual home of the seagull, so don’t be surprised to see these birds fill
the sky and play on the wind here.
Day 11: Essaouria
A day to take Essaouria
at your own pace. It’s a delightful village to get lost in its narrow streets with
its famous blue doors. Lots of interesting things to buy. Find one of the

or afternoon tea. Essaouria is a water sports enthusiast’s dream destination.

accommodation.
